The bill has passed both chambers and awaits the President's signature. We have found no report that it has been signed. Check congress.gov for the official status.

Timeline

April 2026The House passes H.R. 227 by a vote of 350 to 5.
September 30, 2026The Senate passes H.R. 227 by unanimous consent. Because it passed without amendment, no further House vote is needed.
October 1, 2026Senators Britt and Hassan announce passage.
NextEnrollment and presentment to the President. He has ten days, not counting Sundays, to sign or veto. If he does nothing while Congress is in session, it becomes law.
Within 90 days of enactmentIRS and SSA outreach plan due, under the bill.
To be announcedIRS form and procedures for revoking the exemption.
January 1, 2029The window opens: first eligible tax year.
Generally April 15, 2031Application due for the second year, 2030, with extensions available. Confirm against IRS instructions.
